We work, we stress, we exercise, we caffeinate. Even when the sun goes down we're exposed to light - the TV, the phone, that facebook status that just has to be updated right now! Then we get in to bed and wonder why we can't sleep.
For anyone who feels like this story is a little familiar, I've made a sleep-potion that is delicious and easy to make at home. You've probably heard of valerian before but don't realise that it's a really stinky root-herb. Give yourself a good dose of it before bed though and you'll be sleeping like a log. Get ready to zzzzzzzzzzzz.......
- 2 tsp dried valerian root
- 1/2 tsp cardamom pods
- 1 cinnamon stick
- pinch nutmeg
- 1 1/4 cups full cream milk (or your favourite alternative. Use dairy if you can cope with it . The video explains why!)
- 20g dark chocolate
- 1 tsp coconut sugar or maple syrup (optional)
Grind the herbies up in to a powder before pouring them in to a saucepan with the milk and chocolate. Simmer on a low heat for 10 minutes, stirring constantly, and then strain. Mix in the extra sugar for sweetness if you need, then enjoy 30 minutes before you plan on falling in to bed!
