Type "Why c-" in to Google, and it knows what you want, with "Why can't I sleep?" being one of the first suggestions. Why? Because almost everybody experiences restless sleep from time to time, and it sucks.
Insomnia (which can be either difficulty getting to sleep, or poor quality of sleep) is one of the most common complaints I see in clinic. When people come into my practice with a long list of health concerns, I generally ask them to prioritise them for treatment and “Please just help me sleep!” is the most common response coming in at number one.
A poor night’s sleep throws everything off: we wake up unrefreshed, struggle through the daily grind, rely on coffee and sugary treats to get through the day, and usually end up taking work home with us. And then we wonder why we can’t switch off at the end of the day! A good night time routine is essential, as is learning to respect our bodies’ natural rhythm.
